A Look Back in History

The Grangerland-Wigginsville Volunteer Fire Department was founded by a group of citizend in this area in 1969. The women held bake sales, softball tournaments, vollyball turnaments and many other types of fundraisers to support the fire department.

We acquired an older model C60 Chevrolet cab and chassis and the men built a fire truck water tank, installed a pump and other necessary items. They later acquired an International truck and proceeded to do the same with this truck, giving them thesecond fire truck.

In 1972 the first fire station was built on property donated by C. L. McKinley and D. D. Granger. This station was built with oil field pipe and sheetmetal. Not much more then a barn, but it housed two fire trucks and a small office and a rest room.

In 1978 the Department purchased an older Mack fire truck from Brighton, New York. THis truck was modified to carry 1000 gallons of water and had a 750 gallon per minute (GPM) pump.

Then in 1979 the citizens of the area voted in a taxing district known as Montgomery County Rural Fire Prevention District No. 9. This was a $0.03 tax to help support the Fire Departments of this area, Grangerland-Wigginsville V.F.D. and Bennette V.F.D. This taxing districtallowed us to build a new station at Grangerland. The building was a 40 foot by 80 foot steel frame with metal skin structure that incorporated three tuck bays, two restrooms, two offices and a training room for a cost of $69,000. While teh building was being constructed, we purchased two new trucks, one American LaFrance Ford pumper with a 750 gallon tank, 1250 GPM pump and six man cab for $87,000 and one American Collins tanker with a 1500 gallon tank, 250 GPM pump, a jet dump, dump tank and three man cab at a cost of $68,000.

In 1986 / 87 we constructed our second station at Four Corners. Again we builta 40 foot by 80 foot steel frame, metal skin three bay building with offices and meeting room for a cost of $102,000. Then in 1988 we received our first custom built pumper. It was a Spartan Smeal with a 1000 gallon tank, 1250 GPM pump, hig side compartments, deck gun, foam system for oil and gasoline fires and a six man cab with air pack seats in the jump seat area for a cost of $186,000.

In 1993, the department was re-incorporated to become Granerland Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. We started on a more agressive training program with the State Fireman and Fire Martials Association.

In 1995 the citizens of this area voted to convert the MCRFPD No. 9 to Montgomery County Emergency Service District No. 9. THis allowed the E.S.D. to tax up to $0.10 on $100.00 property valuations. This enabled us to improve the Department greatly by adding on to the Grangerland Station on FM 2090 by 3500 square feet, making it a five bay station with a larger training room, duty crew office, storage room, firefighter bunk room, ambulance crew bunk room, restrooms, kitchen, day room and ESD office meeting room. Most of the interior work was performed by members for a cost of $137,000.

We then purchased five trucks from 1997 to 1999. A new 1998 Quality Spartan Pumper with a six man, air conditioned cab, 1000 gallon tank, 1250 GPM pump, class A foam system, air pack seats, deck gun, command light and a PTO driven 8000 watt generator for a cost of $221,700. a new 1998 Westex International Tanker with 1800 gallon tank, 500 GPM pump, both sides and read dumps, dump tank and class A foam system for $138,00. Two 1997 Casco Ford F47 series Super Duty Boosters. Both carrying aproximately 200 gallons of water, 180 GPM pumps, and class A foam systems for $50,000 each. One 1999 Ford F450 Super Duty Rescue truck. This truck carries the jaws of life, air bags, medical equipment, a breathing air system and other rescue equipment.

The the time span from 1988 to present, we have purchased a breathing air compressor, amny new air packs, up to date Firefighter Personal Protective Gear, thousands of feet of hose, new communication equipment, and we also acquired a hot spotted ad a gas detection device.

Our fleet currently consists of two Class A pumpers, two Boosters, one Tanker, and one Rescue. We operate out of two stations with a membership consisting of part time paid firefighters/EMTs, about thirty-two volunteers, twelve of whice are trainied ECA or higher First Responders. These first responders often get to your medical need ahead of the twenty-four hour MCHD ambulance crew that is at station 41. The members of this department over the past ten years have had over 15,000 hours of training. In th epast two years, we have responded to over 2,000 calls including structure fires, medical, motor vehicle accidents and hazardious material spills.

Over the past few years, due to the annexation of territory by the City of Conroe, the depletion of the oil field and higher costs for everything, we have suffered the loss of approximately $100,000 in revenues er year. Therefore we must have fundraisers and ask for donations from you the public. This is so we may continue providing the best service possible to the citizens of this district.

All of this equipment has been paid for by you the citizens of this area, either by donation or through taxes and we thank you!

We the members of G.V.F.D. thank you for your continued support.
